Everest Camp . Mount Everest isn't the world's tallest summit. Everest Base Camp Trek .  Mauna Kea, which peaks at a towering 10,200 metres, holds this distinction. The majority of Mauna Kea, however, is below sea level. Mount Everest is the world's highest point above sea level.

Sir George Everest gave Everest the name Peak 15 when it was first recognised by the western world in 1841. Mount Everest was named after British surveyor Sir George Everest in 1865, and it is pronounced 'Eve-rest' rather than 'Ever-est,' as the British surveyor's surname is.

The Nepalese gave Everest the name Sagarmatha, which means "Goddess of the Sky." Tibetans refer to it as Chomolungma, which means "Goddess Mother of Mountains." Before attempting to summit, all mountaineers must first obtain permission and safe passage from the inhabitants. Before the summit trek, a puja ceremony is held at Everest Base Camp.
