Zanskar Winter Trek

Zanskar Winter Trek

This expedition-style hike follows the frozen Zanskar River all the way to Zanskar, passing through a stunning gorge. Zanskar, located to the south west of Leh and bounded by the Himalayan and Zanskar mountains, is the most remote of all the trans-Himalayan valleys. The valley is over 5,000 square kilometres in size and climbs to 13,154 feet in elevation. The only way to travel to Zanskar Valley by car is to take the road from Kargil to Padum. The location is inaccessible for around seven months of the year due to severe snowfall. All of the crossings are closed in the winter, and the only way out of Zanskar is through the frozen Zanskar River, which has become a popular winter tourist attraction.

Zanskar has long been regarded as one of India's most enigmatic regions. During the winter, the Zanskar region of Ladakh freezes solid, giving it the appearance of a Chadar (a carpet of ice). The beautiful frozen sheet of ice has attracted travellers and trekkers from all over the world over the years, making the Chadar Frozen River Trek one of India's most famous, hard, and intriguing treks (check out our route if you're interested in trekking to Chadar). Temperatures in the area can drop below zero degrees throughout the trek, so be sure you're physically fit and ready to deal with the cold.
