Pelling to Gangtok
Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, is certainly one of the most popular highland resorts in northeast India. The town is recognised for its beautiful splendour and stunning views of Kanchenjunga, Nepal's tallest mountain, which is positioned on the ridge of a hill at an elevation of 1700 metres. With summer temperatures of roughly 23 degrees Celsius and winter temperatures of around 6 degrees Celsius, the town enjoys a warm temperate climate.
This mountain resort is located 110 kilometres from Siliguri and is well connected to the rest of the region's major cities.
Gangtok's official population is under 1 lakh, according to the 2011 census. The true number is likely to be in the region of 1,50,000. In Gangtok and other parts of the region, Nepali is the primary language. However, Hindi, English, Bengali, and Tibetan are spoken and understood by a sizable section of the population. The town is around 25 square kilometres in size.
Gangtok is connected to the rest of the world via NH31A, which connects Sikkim and Siliguri. The NJP train station in Siliguri is the closest station (125 kilometres). Bagdogra (130 km) is the nearest major airport, though there is a small helipad on the outskirts of town. Between Gangtok and Bagdogra, there are also helicopter tours.
Daily buses and taxis connect Gangtok to all other towns, including Siliguri and Darjeeling.
